How Can Therapy Help?

During my experience as a therapist, I believe connection and attunement with another human being, or an animal, to be the most healing and valuable experience. When we feel seen, heard, and held in the comfort and validation of that moment hope is restored. Clients have the opportunity to experience empathy, compassion and unconditional positive regard when a decision is made to enter a therapeutic relationship where judgement is suspended.

My role as a therapist is to offer my clients a new perspective on situations or experiences that may be creating stress, sorrow, shame, isolation, anger, disbelief, confusion, self-doubt, anxiety, or emotional distress. I will be prepared to offer strategies for managing the thoughts that can often take over and hijack the nervous system and easily turn into cognitive distortions. My commitment is to educate my clients on how to bring the nervous system back into balance and restore a sense of well-being.

Gaining self-awareness of your specific emotional and cognitive patterns and how they impact your nervous system and relationship to Self and Others is paramount to the time we spend together. Embracing and practicing present moment awareness is a key aspect in understanding who you are, what you want, and how to get there. As your therapist, I will be a support and witness to the courage, honesty, and determination this process requires.

  • Support – You’re not alone and sometimes you need to hear that from somebody else.
  • Self-Care -Your story and your emotions are yours. Sometimes a safe and supportive place is needed to explore thoughts, feelings and concerns and share fears and burdens.
  • Authenticity. Give yourself the freedom to share your perspectives and gain the confidence you need to make everyday decisions without self-doubt and indecision.
  • Resilience. – It is a choice, and sometimes getting a little extra guidance from a professional can help you gain traction, build tolerance, and increase your resilience.

My Approach

My approach to therapy is relational, psychoanalytic, and guided by Jungian Psychodynamic theory. My practice is experiential through equine assisted activities. I invite clients to explore relationship patterns that have contributed to psychological distress and gain awareness of how to positively contribute to interpersonal effectiveness, establish meaningful connections, and set appropriate boundaries with self and others.

The following relationship principles guide the therapeutic process:

  • Healthy relationships meet the needs of both parties
  • Choice is always offered in the context of relationship
  • Connect before you correct or expect
  • Relationship before the task
  • Most psychological distress originates in relationship
  • It takes a safe, connected, and attuned relationship to heal
  • Healthy, Predictable, and Consistent relationships build safety and trust
  • If it is not good for one, it is typically not good for either
  • Invite ‘We’ thinking vs. ‘Me’ Thinking

The Process

How does therapy work?

Therapy addresses psychological distress associated with depression, anxiety, grief and loss, self-loathing, unhealthy relationship dynamics, and insecure attachment styles in relationship to others. Therapy can help break through self- defeating thoughts and patterns by strengthening self-awareness and understanding prior experiences that may have contributed to unhealthy patterns of functioning or coping. A client has the opportunity, through therapy, to better understand the relationship dynamics they create so healthier ways of personal and social engagement can be approached with care and appreciation. Those who make the decision to begin the therapeutic process create the opportunity to restore meaning and hope to life and relationships.
